PARCC assessments will provide timely information about student performance that will allow teachers and parents to identify student needs and adjust instruction to meet those needs.  Collecting this data will make it possible for districts to see how their schools do over time, and allow teachers to figure out what’s working so they can adjust instruction.

The PARCC states are highly committed to protecting student data and privacy. The consortium has taken a number of steps, including adopting a data privacy and security policy, to ensure the information gathered is used for the sole purpose of measuring student progress.

To underscore their commitment to the privacy of student data and dispel any myths about the federal government accessing data from assessments, education chiefs in the PARCC states joined with chiefs from across the country in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

They reminded Secretary Duncan that states have never submitted student-level assessment data to the U.S. Department of Education in the past, and they confirmed that the transition to new assessments should not cause anyone to worry that federal reporting requirements will change.

Simply put, neither states nor the PARCC consortium will share any personally identifiable information about K-12 students with the U.S. Department of Education or any federal agency.
