Approximately 60,000 high school students in five states will be taking the PARCC tests during the “fall block” testing session, starting this week. It marks the beginning of the second year of administering the educator-built, kid-tested assessment. PARCC is built on higher standards – meant to challenge students to demonstrate skills that are needed to succeed in college and careers. The testing window for most students will begin next spring.

Educator-built, kid-tested items will better prepare students

The states that make up the PARCC consortium are taking the exceptional step of releasing test questions from this year’s PARCC assessments to give teachers a powerful tool to inform classroom instruction. The release of the test items will give parents insight into the kinds of questions students are seeing on their tests, so assessments aren’t a mystery. The test questions were built with robust mathematics problems and authentic reading passages selected and reviewed extensively by dozens of educators from PARCC states.

Competitive award provides access to high quality educational resources

October 21, 2015 – The Department of Defense Education Activity, the organization in charge of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade educational programs on behalf of the Department of Defense, entered into a membership agreement with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and will serve as a liaison to the consortium’s governing board.

Yesterday, a number of principals from the PARCC states participated in a webinar to discuss what is coming for this school year—including test design changes, score reports and instructional tools.

Bari Erlichson, Chief Performance Officer/Assistant Commissioner from the NJ Department of Education, recapped the first year of the PARCC assessment. Emil Carafa, Principal of Washington Elementary School (NJ), walked participants through some mock score reports and shared his plans to communicate about the report to parents. Principals also got a preview of new, interactive resources for educators and parents.

Be sure to check out this great column in the Boston Globe yesterday about why Massachusetts does so well economically and is "so smart" – and the connection between the two. In it, Evan Horowitz argues that the state has long recognized that its economic health relies on having a strong educational system. He writes that a strong knowledge economy demands high education standards and points to PARCC as part of the continual push for higher standards.
“Perhaps the biggest education reform currently underway is the switch from one standardized test, MCAS, to another, PARCC. The PARCC exam is specifically tailored for college preparedness.”
