Reflection is a significant part of growth. At Westmont Junior High School, in Westmont, Illinois, my 8th grade Literacy classes took the PARCC test this past March. My amazing two 8th grade Literacy teachers understood there was an interesting lesson within the ongoing discussions about PARCC testing in both school and political forums.

My experience in my former life as a classroom teacher and, more recently, working with teachers and local leaders in the PARCC states has shown me that a great tool can lead to more than just a shift in the classroom, it can lead to a collective shift in thinking and productive conversations among peers.

Teachers want all of their students to be familiar with the technologies used on the PARCC assessments so none will be at a disadvantage due to lack of exposure to technology. The technology tutorial is designed to equal the playing field.

Blueprints are a series of documents that together describe the content and structure of an assessment. These documents define the total number of tasks and/or items for any given assessment component, the standards measured, the item types, and the point values for each.

The PARCC states are committed to secure testing because fair tests are essential to better preparing the next generation for success. The states contract with a test vendor to search public social media and websites for images or words from live tests, which are copyright infringements and jeopardize the fairness of the test for all students.

Performance level descriptors outline the knowledge, skills, and practices that students performing at any given level should be able to demonstrate in each content area at each grade level to signal that they are academically prepared to engage successfully in further studies in each content area, the next grade's material and, later, at the high school-level for students to demonstrate that they are college and career ready.
